The University of Miskolc is the largest university in Northern Hungary, with academic traditions stretching back to 1735 through its predecessor, the University of Mining and Metallurgy of Selmecbánya — one of the first non-ecclesiastical schools in the Habsburg Empire. Officially established in 1949, the university is located on an expansive 85-hectare campus in Miskolc, known as Egyetemváros ("University Town"). It comprises seven faculties covering mechanical engineering, earth sciences, materials science, law, economics, humanities, and music. The university enrolls approximately 10,000 students, offers programs in English, and maintains over 150 international cooperation agreements and 160 Erasmus partnerships. QS ranked it #1201–1400 globally in 2026.
