The University of Göttingen (Georg-August-Universität Göttingen), founded in 1737, is a public research university in Lower Saxony and among the largest and oldest in Germany. Spanning 13 faculties -- Theology, Law, Social Sciences, Business and Economics, Humanities, Medicine, Mathematics and Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Psychology, Geoscience and Geography, Forest Sciences and Forest Ecology, and Agricultural Sciences -- Göttingen offers over 210 degree programs to roughly 30,000 students, including 4,500 international students from over 138 countries. Its academic lineage includes 47 Nobel Laureates, and it is the only university in Northern Germany funded under the German Universities Excellence Initiative. It hosts five Max Planck Institutes, the highest concentration of any German city.
