The University of Birmingham, founded in 1900, was the UK's first civic ("red brick") university and accepted students regardless of background or religion from its founding. A Russell Group member on a single campus in Edgbaston, Birmingham is home to Europe's largest medical school and the Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education (BCRRE), Europe's largest railway research centre. It is a founding member of the Universitas 21 global university network and hosts a hub of the Alan Turing Institute for data science and AI. With around 33,000 students including roughly a third from outside the UK, Birmingham offers over 350 undergraduate and 600 postgraduate programmes across engineering, medicine, business, law and the humanities.
