Universiti Sains Malaysia

George Town, Malaysia

Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), founded in 1969, is Malaysia's second-oldest university and the only institution nationally granted APEX (Accelerated Programme for Excellence) status, marking it out as a fast-tracked world-class research university. Its main Minden campus in Penang spans 416.6 hectares of landscaped grounds — including a bird sanctuary home to over 20 endangered species — earning it the nickname "The University in a Garden," alongside a dedicated Engineering Campus at Nibong Tebal and a Health Campus at Kubang Kerian, Kelantan. USM is particularly renowned for pharmacy, engineering and medical sciences. With around 28,000 students, including roughly 5,500 international students from over 60 countries, it consistently ranks among Malaysia's top universities and the world's top 150.
