Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), or The National University of Malaysia, was founded in 1970 with a founding mission to establish Bahasa Melayu as a language of higher learning and scholarship, alongside English-medium international programmes today. Based on a green campus in Bangi, Selangor, with additional facilities in Cheras and Kuala Lumpur — including its own teaching hospital, Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz — UKM is a member of the ASEAN University Network and the Association of Commonwealth Universities. With around 28,000 students including a substantial international cohort from over 35 countries, UKM is particularly known for Malay studies, Islamic studies, environmental research through its LESTARI institute, medicine and education.
