Semmelweis University is Hungary's oldest and most prestigious medical university, founded in 1769 in Budapest. Named after the pioneering physician Ignác Semmelweis, it is the leading health sciences institution in Central Europe and one of the largest healthcare providers in Hungary. With six faculties covering medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, health sciences, physical education, and conductive education, the university serves over 13,000 students — of whom more than 40% are international, hailing from 110 countries. Semmelweis is ranked #251–300 globally by Times Higher Education (2026) and is among the world's top 300 in medicine, pharmaceutical sciences, and life sciences by QS.
