The Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME), founded in 1782, is Hungary's most significant technical university and the world's oldest institute of technology to hold university rank and structure. Located on the banks of the Danube in Budapest, BME delivers approximately 70% of Hungary's engineering degrees across eight faculties and over 110 departments. Programs span civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, architecture, chemical technology, transportation engineering, natural sciences, and economic sciences. BME is ranked #711–720 in the QS World University Rankings 2026 and has produced world-renowned alumni including Nobel laureate Dennis Gabor and mathematician John von Neumann. With approximately 21,000 students including 1,300+ international students, programs are offered in Hungarian, English, German, French, and Russian.
